Help We Hebben Een Dierentuin Deel 5

Help We Hebben Een Dierentuin Deel 5

Alright, settle in folks, grab a koffie verkeerd, and let me tell you about the glorious, chaotic, and utterly bonkers spectacle that is Help, We Hebben Een Dierentuin! 5! For those of you who've been living under a very large, meerkat-proof rock, this is the fifth installment of the Dutch family film franchise based (very loosely, I might add) on the Benjamin Mee memoir, We Bought a Zoo. Prepare yourselves, it’s a wild ride!

The Premise (if you can call it that)

So, the basic gist – and I use the word "basic" very generously – is that we have a well-meaning, but perpetually flustered family, specifically the Gildes, running a zoo. Yep, you heard me right. A zoo. Imagine trying to manage your own household, then multiply the chaos by…oh, let's say a hundred, and throw in some escaped penguins for good measure. That’s the Gildes' daily life.

In this fifth film, the Gildes face a new challenge (because, honestly, running a zoo wasn't challenging enough). Apparently, their zoo is facing some sort of… evaluation. Yes, that ominous word that strikes fear into the heart of every student, employee, and apparently, zookeeper. And if they fail? Their zoo could be shut down! Gulp.

Meet the Gildes (and the Animals, Duh!)

Let's meet our merry band of misfits, shall we?

  • Thomas: The dad, played by the ever-charming Waldemar Torenstra. He's the glue that holds the family (and the zoo) together, although sometimes that glue seems to be made of duct tape and wishful thinking.
  • Lizzy: Thomas's partner, played by de delightful Eva van de Wijdeven. She is the pragmatic counterbalance to Thomas's optimism, and keeps the whole operation from collapsing into a pile of ape poop. (metaphorically, of course… mostly).
  • The Kids: A collection of adorable, mischievous youngsters who are basically raised by a pack of wolves (again, metaphorically… I think). They're the ones who usually end up getting into the most outlandish situations with the animals. Think: accidentally painting a zebra pink, or teaching a parrot to swear like a sailor.
  • The Animals: Need I say more? We're talking lions, tigers, bears (oh my!), monkeys swinging from the rafters (literally), and a whole host of other creatures that would make Noah himself sweat. Fun fact: Did you know that the collective noun for a group of flamingos is a "flamboyance"? This movie has flamboyances of everything!

The Plot Thickens (Like Mud in a Hippo Enclosure)

So, the evaluation is looming, and the Gildes are in panic mode. They need to whip their zoo into shape, fast. This involves a series of hilarious mishaps, near-disasters, and heartwarming moments that will have you laughing one minute and reaching for the tissues the next.

Here's a taste of the chaos:

  • The Escape Artist Emu: There's always one animal that causes the most trouble, right? In this case, it's an emu with a penchant for freedom. Imagine trying to catch an emu in the middle of town. It's like chasing a very tall, very angry feather duster.
  • The Overly Enthusiastic Volunteer: Every zoo needs volunteers, but this one… let's just say their enthusiasm exceeds their competence. Think: accidentally feeding the monkeys too much stroopwafels, or trying to give a lion a bath with bubble bath.
  • The Love Story That's Gone to the Birds (Literally): Because what's a family movie without a little romance? But this isn't your typical boy-meets-girl scenario. This one involves two birds, some very awkward courtship rituals, and a whole lot of feathers flying.

Why You Should Watch It (Even If You Hate Animals – Which You Don't, Right?)

Okay, so maybe you're not a huge animal person. Maybe the thought of wading through monkey poo makes you shudder. But trust me on this one, Help, We Hebben Een Dierentuin! 5 is more than just a movie about animals. It's a story about family, about perseverance, and about the importance of following your dreams – even if those dreams involve owning a zoo full of unpredictable creatures.

Here's why you should give it a shot:

  • It's Hilarious: The slapstick comedy, the witty dialogue, the sheer absurdity of the situations… it's laugh-out-loud funny from beginning to end.
  • It's Heartwarming: Beneath all the chaos, there's a genuinely touching story about a family that loves each other and will do anything to protect their zoo.
  • It's Dutch!: Embrace the culture! Learn some new words! (Like "poep," you'll hear that one a lot). Plus, Dutch family movies are just inherently charming.
  • You Might Learn Something: Okay, maybe not about advanced zoology, but you might learn a thing or two about animal behavior, or at least how not to approach a grumpy rhinoceros. Fun Fact: Rhinos are surprisingly fast.

Final Thoughts: More Than Just Monkey Business

So, there you have it. Help, We Hebben Een Dierentuin! 5 is a wild, wacky, and wonderfully heartwarming film that will leave you smiling from ear to ear. It's not high art, it's not going to win any Oscars, but it is the perfect movie to watch with your family on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Just be prepared for the kids to start asking for a pet meerkat afterwards. (Don't say I didn't warn you!)

A Little Behind-the-Scenes Trivia (Because You're Curious, I Know It!)

  • Real Animals Were Used (Mostly): While some of the more dangerous scenes involved CGI, most of the animals you see on screen are the real deal. This meant that the set was basically a giant, very expensive petting zoo.
  • The Actors Had to Take Zookeeping Classes: Before filming, the actors went through a crash course in zookeeping. They learned how to clean enclosures, feed the animals, and even handle some of the less dangerous creatures. (Though I'm pretty sure they drew the line at cleaning the lion's den.)
  • The Emu Was a Diva: Apparently, the emu who played the escape artist was quite the handful. It refused to cooperate with the trainers, demanded its own trailer, and only ate organic corn. (Okay, I might be exaggerating a little, but you get the idea.)

So, what are you waiting for? Go watch Help, We Hebben Een Dierentuin! 5! You won't regret it. Unless, of course, you have a phobia of feathers, fur, or general pandemonium. In that case, maybe stick to watching documentaries about staplers.

And if you do end up buying a zoo after watching this movie, please, please invite me over. I promise to bring stroopwafels (but I won't let the monkeys have them all!).
